The International Olympic Committee has barred Russia from competing at the 2018 Winter Games.
The suspension follows a lengthy investigation into allegations of state-sponsored doping at the 2014 Games hosted by Russia in Sochi.
Russian athletes who are able to prove they are clean will, however, be allowed to compete under a neutral flag at the event which is set to take place in Pyeongchang.
‘This was an unprecedented attack on the integrity of the Olympic Games and sport,’ said IOC president Thomas Bach.
‘This should draw a line under this damaging episode and serve as a catalyst for a more effective anti-doping system.’
The former president of Switzerland, Samuel Schmid, headed up the investigation which spent 17 months, in the face of incessant Russian denials, compiling its evidence and found ‘systemic manipulation of the anti-doping rules and system’.
As well as the immediate suspension of the ROC, the IOC announced a raft of sanctions against senior officials implicated in the scandal, including Russia’s deputy prime minister Vitaly Mutko.
It has also fined the ROC £11.16million to reimburse the costs of the various investigations into Russia’s cheating and help set up the IOC’s new independent testing authority.
